92nd Scottish Annual Congress

14th - 15th April 2023 at the Dewars Centre, Perth


Hosts: Dundee & District Philatelic Society

The 92nd Congress was held by the Association of Scottish Philatelic Societies in the Dewars Centre, Perth during the 14th and 15th April 2023 where Dundee & District Philatelic Society were the host society for the two days, and Francis Podger FRPSL presided as President.

This event celebrates 100 years since the first meeting of 4 societies which has evolved to become known as the Association of Scottish Philatelic Societies. As hosts for the event Dundee & District Philatelic Society have produced a Cover to mark the event.

Cover:

The cover commemorates the fact that the concept of the Association was conceived in 1923 through the efforts of a member of the Dundee Society Dr. A. E. Kidd. A cancellation has also been approved by Royal Mail which will be used for the event


Exhibition:

24 dealers of postage stamps, postal history and accessories attended the exhibition from all over the UK.

There were 129 frames of exhibits on display, both competitive and non-competitive:
36 Competitive frames
62 Frames from the Host Society
11 Frames of exhibits from other societies
10 Frames for the Tom Rielly Display and
10 frames for the new Alan Watson Memorial Competition

In addition there were 28 entries for the Junior one-sheet competition.

The winner of the Alan Watson Memorial Competion, which is judged by those members of the public who attended the exhibition, was Alexander Kerr with his entry of "Swap only that Nora", which was an innovate use of the letters symbolising "Alan Watson Trophy".

This year the Host Society displays were judged by the immediate ex-President Colin Caskie and the President elect Alex Walker who judged the winning display to be "Germany: States to Germania 1849-1900" by Harry Jackson who received the "Robert Burns Quaich" during the Annual Dinner.

Tom Rielly Display:

On Friday night the Tom Rielly display was given by Captain James Podger FRPSL with a display entitled 'British West Indies Postal History'.

Civic Welcome & Congress Dinner:

Following the Tom Rielly display a civic welcome hosted by Bailie Chris Ahern of Perth & Kinross Council was held in the Dewars Centre which was very well attended.

This was then followed by the Congress Dinner. A thoroughly entertaining after dinner speech was given by our Guest of Honour, Graham Winters FRPSL and the evening was rounded off when the Scottish Congress competition winners were awarded their trophies.

Election of New President:

At the AGM held on Saturday 15th April delegates elected Alex Walker from Aberdeen Philatelic Society to become President of ASPS and Graham Mill from Glasgow Thematic Society as the new Vice President.
Below is a picture of outgoing President Francis Podger FRPSL (on the right) handing over the chain of office to Alex Walker.
