Tobago - An Island's Stamps in a Frame

Exhibitor: Dr. Stewart Gardiner Award: 83; Large Silver Gilt
Description: Tobago was late in issuing stamps: 1879 compared to 1855 for Trinidad, its sister island. The stamps were produced by De La Rue by typography. The stamps used the economical key and duty plate principle which allowed the basic design to be constant for all values with the duty (value and frame) being applied separately. Very few significant and constant flaws appear on these stamps : their positions are identified by “column/row” beside the relevant block. The duty plate “malformed CE” is also found on Dominica stamps as the same duty plate was used.
